Hello, York Harbor! Anneke and Austin are planning a nautical-inspired wedding next summer at the historic York Harbor Reading Room. York is a gorgeous, quaint seaside town with beautiful homes and beaches (and one of the world's smallest suspension bridges).

Anneke stated right off the bat that she likes navy suits for the gentlemen. Since Sam and Makiko gave her two fab options with that in mind, I decided to go a different route. Bring on the Nantucket reds! I went all out preptastic, complete with the standard navy blazer, a 9tailors red check dress shirt with adorable anchor fabric insert on the collar and cuffs, and navy blue and white polka dot bow tie. Here, the muted reds coordinate and act as a neutral canvas for the blazer and bow tie to pop against. And since this is a wedding in a New England town with a long fishing history - a J. Crew lobster claw belt and antique-looking rope knot cufflinks are de rigeur (and the perfect groomsmen gifts).

Classic Gucci horsebit loafers - the preppy staple - make an appearance at the church for a formal look. But after the ceremony, why not slip off the jacket, take off the bow tie and throw on these hella chic boat shoes? You're dancing feet will thank you. A classic watch rounds out the look. Finally, this vintage print of the York Harbor Reading Room and cliff would make the cutest Save the Date - happy planning!

The Polished Prep Option 2

Anneke and Austin will be wed in Maine next summer. And, as you can tell, I've got an anchor theme going.

Anneke describes Austin's style as preppy, but not "pop your collar" prep. I love that he has diverse tastes and feels equally comfortable in Uniqlo basics as he does in Nantucket Reds. So, what do I have in store for Austin? Let's start with the foundation pieces. I chose a solid, navy suit and matching slacks. Just a simple navy suit will do. Then, I think a light blue dress shirt would go very well with the navy suit. Totally classic and formal. Their wedding colors are navy and fuchsia, so it's important to let those colors pop throughout the outfit. I'm totally loving the J. Press tie and silk knot cufflinks. Next, I found the most amazing loafers from Ferragamo. The earthy color is a perfect complement to the navy suit.

Let's talk about the nautical themed goodies. I didn't want to go too overboard or cutesy with the nautical theme. So, I found an anchor tie tack from Giles & Brother that Austin and his groomsmen can wear. Let me tell you girls, tie accessories are back! Next, I found nautical themed socks in gray from J. McGaughlin. Very cute. Lastly, I found awesome thank you cards with navy and fuchsia anchors on them. Yes, it can be customized with your name on them.

Congratulations to Anneke and Austin! I love the idea of a preppy / nautical wedding that is at the same time very elegant and polished.

I picked a beautiful navy suit with the option of either a white or light pink shirt. I really like the snapshot of the light pink shirt, hot pink boutonniere, navy and pink striped tie, and navy suit. Or, for a more classic look, go with white.

I opted for classic New England mother of pearl cufflinks. I think Anneke's idea of thickly striped navy and raspberry ties sounds like a great idea, so I incorporated that as well. But, the best part of this outfit for me are the shoes- check out this navy suede and cognac leather brogues! Simply amazing.

Rayann and Benny are an off-the-beaten path couple. She's got a custom tea-length dress featuring multi-colored tulle and he's a lover of all things surf and comfort - and that most certainly does not include pants (a true Hawaiian!).

I'm sticking with my fellow bloggers and going with shorts. It's always fun to work with someone with very specific tastes. This Washington wedding-bound couple is having a colorful affair with a laid-back attitude and their ensembles reflect that. Rayann's dress is a mix of jewel-like colors - so I've made his simple for one very simple reason: to let her shine. Navy silk-linen shorts are comfortable and elegant (the dark color raises the formality level - this is a wedding, after all). I've paired them with a white blazer, white 9tailors button down and slim navy tie for a clean, modern look. If that's too monochromatic for you, add in a fun tie or swap out the traditional white shirt for a coordinating patterned button down (I slipped in an alternative for both). For shoes, there's a classic Hugo Boss pair that amp up the elegance or, to go a little different, a funky grey suede shoe from Topman that works with virtually any outfit. No socks allowed!

A little flair? How about a custom Pomp & Plumage boutonniere made of brightly-colored tulle flowers and leaves to match the skirt on Rayann's dress? Genius!

A Colorful Affair - Option 2

Our next couple, Rayann and Benny, will be wed in a mere 3 weeks!

Here's what I have in store for Benny.

Since Benny hates pants, I decided to go with shorts for this look. But, there's no reason to look sloppy. There are so many clean, sophisticated short designs out there! I've chosen a neutral pair from John Lewis. They're so cute! I love the button details at the waist. A casual blazer is also necessary - it's not too stuffy. I couldn't decide among the red, green or blue gingham, short-sleeve shirts. But, each are a perfect complement to Rayann and Benny's wedding colors. I gave the shoes some thought. I've seen quite a few men wearing dress shoes with their shorts. But, it's not a look that everyone can pull off. And, for a laid-back groom like Benny, dress shoes are not the way to go! So, I have some beige boat shoes (with green striped accents). For Benny, a Hawaiian native, pair of flip flops is a must have! The supple pair are from Olukai Ohana. Love them. They are functional, stylish and comfortable. Speaking of Hawaii, Benny also needs a pair of board shorts!

The accessories are key to keep the outfit fun and unfussy. I have a pair of aviator sunglasses, a straw fedora, and canvas belt.

Lastly, the boutonniere is made of a yellow dahlia. Love the petite petals.

Congratulations to Rayann and Benny! Rayann noted that Benny hates pants- so I opted to put him in his favorite style, shorts. He should feel comfortable and good in what he's wearing. For this colorful (Rayann's dress has layers of candy-colored tulle) late-summer wedding, I opted for some linen suit separates with bright accents. I love the fun colors in the face of the watch, which reflects the colors of the gerber daisies that will decorate the ceremony. Solid brown leather shoes and belt anchor the look. The mosaic-style cufflinks and pom-pom yellow flower boutonniere are both so much fun!

The colorful-ness, cheerfulness, and playfulness of this wedding sounds like so much fun. I hope you got some good ideas, and enjoy yourselves!

Some people just do things the right way. Like Amber and Sean - getting hitched in Hawaii and following it up with a 4-course meal at legendary restaurant Roy's in Waikiki. This is like the greatest date of your life - beautiful location, fabulous clothes, and ridiculous food - only you get to share it with 200 people who you love. Um, can I come?

Amber's dress is raw silk by Lena Medoyeff. The gorgeous church you saw in Monday's post is their ceremony site and part of their color inspiration: muted reds, pinks and ambers with rich wood tones and splashes of vibrant colors. I won't lie - originally I wanted a pair of pale pink linen trousers on Sean. Pink is the color of the sunset, hibiscus and a light sunburn - and it complements the blues of the ocean and sky perfectly. But the look wasn't formal enough for the setting - we need a suit (and a pink suit may be overdoing it). So I went bold and chose this light blue fitted summer suit from Brooks Brothers instead. Too fashion-forward for you? Swap it out with a beige linen suit and keep the rest.

The 9tailors check-print shirt in orange and blue is just right for the setting (in a sea and sunset colorway) and since I'm going big, nothing else will do but a bow tie. Classic cognac-colored leather shoes and belt are simple and ground the look. Throw in antique bakelite cufflinks with the Hawaiian royal crest from the late 1800s and you've got an ensemble fit for a king! Er, groom.

Okay - a Hawaiian shirt is cliche and "old man meets midlife crises and buys a convertible and a trip to the beach." But Hawaiian print board shorts are vintage-looking and totally appropriate! I think the print on this pair is adorable. In fact, I believe a pair is currently en route to Milwaukee. Lastly: the maile lei - or the "lei of royalty," reserved for only the most special occasions. Made from the native Hawaiian vine, maile, the shiny leaves and stems give off a fragrant scent. An elegant and beautiful nod to the island's history.

Amber and Sean are getting hitched in Hawaii! The tropical breeze, palm trees, sunshine, shaved ice. Sounds like, well, paradise.

Here's what he's going to wear. It can be challenging dressing the groom in the tropical heat. So, I chose only lightweight foundation pieces, such as the gray blazer and linen pants. I love gray and neutral tones together. So, you'll see a lot of browns, creams and ivories in this design board. Instead of a long sleeved shirt, I opted for a short-sleeve shirt. Again, pick pieces that are lightweight and won't smother the groom. I've also been enjoying the geek chic moment that guy's are having so, a tropical patterned bow tie in Amber and Sean's wedding colors seems fitting.

Now, on to the fun accessories! I love sandals, but I don't think they really belong in formal wedding photos. Cover those feet, guys! So, instead, I chose shark-gray converse high tops. So, I've found a sophisticated pair of woven sandals and gave Sean the option to change out of sneaks. The belt is also woven (like the sandals). It gives the outfit great texture and dimension. I also love the orange boutonniere. The petite flowers are cute and not too overly feminine.

Sean also needs a canvas bag in a neutral and orange, in case he and Amber decide to escape for a quick getaway to another beautiful, tropical destination for the weekend.

Lastly, I love tropical beach towels. These would make great wedding favors!

Congratulations, Amber and Sean! Your wedding sounds awesome.

In this design board, I really focused on the neckwear. With the grey and light orange wedding palette, there is a lot of color you can play with. When Amber mentioned that Sean had a casual style and liked to wear Tommy Bahama, Polo, and Lucky, I immediately thought of how I could incorporate those aesthetics into neckwear. What I came up with was a bit preppy (see the bow ties and see the plaids) yet something a bit more edgy & hip than pink gingham.

For this summer wedding, I set off a beautiful grey suit with bone colored leather lace ups, tiger's eye cufflinks, and a simple white orchid boutonniere. I would have chosen a more colorful boutonniere, but thought that a crisp white bloom would have a more balancing effect with all of the color already in his outfit.

I have both a white shirt and a creamy orange colored shirt. Either could be worn, it's simply a matter of skin tone and how classic you want to look. I think the orange could give a nice pop of color while the white will look great with essentially anything. Your choice!

To top it all off, I chose a beautiful suede-y grey belt that will blend in seamlessly with the other accessories. I also added a sleek silver watch for that extra oomph factor.

What do you love about weddings?: What don't I love about weddings? I love the intense joy and hopefulness that is bundled into that day and I love the fuss that everyone makes about everything. Weddings are magical. They are ephemeral but everlasting.

Tell us a little about your work. How would you describe your style?: My bow ties are sentimental. They belonged to someone in another form before being a bow tie. Bow ties in general are classic and preppy, but when non-traditional colors and patterns are thrown in they can become so hip and personal. A bow tie tells that world that this is no ordinary man.

What advice do you have for grooms (and brides) when you are working with them?: There's always a way. Be clear about what you want and then find a way to get it. Working with smaller vendors/handcrafters will allow you to customize every aspect of your day the way you imagine.

Tuscan Style - Option 2

When I read the descriptions of the brides who submit their weddings to this blog, it makes me want to plan my wedding all over again. Such is the case of our next wedding. Michelyn and Cameron will be getting married in Italy. They will be wed in a European style garden and dance the night away under the Tuscan stars. Love.

Anyway, what will her groom wear? Michelyn describes her fiance, Cameron as edgy who tends to wear brands like Affliction and True Religion. So, I chose pieces that reflect his style.

First, I chose a black tuxedo blazer with contrast satin trim from Top Man. The cut is shorter and skinnier than a normal tuxedo jacket. I chose slim fit pants also from Top Man. The chambray shirt has been every where this season for a good reason. It's light-weight and soft. It totally dresses down the tuxedo look. The blue bow-tie and red undershirt is a nod to Michelyn and Cameron's wedding colors. We all want that pop of unexpected color. The patent leather high-tops are one of the coolest things I've seen in awhile. I love the sleek, yet artsy look of the watch and the ring. Cameron will also need a very good travel bag from Marc Marmel for this amazing destination wedding. The leather is not too serious as it is slightly cracked and wrinkled. Finally, Michelyn can get the amazing animal themed shot glasses for Cameron. Quirky. Fun. Who can resist mini antlers? I definitely can't.

Tuscan Style

A wedding in Tuscany, how romantic! For this groom, I again opted for a navy linen suit. They are getting married in about one month, so it is sure to be warm weather! Also, I felt that navy blends beautifully with the Tuscan backdrop. I added some vintage accents such as the watch and the cufflink. The boutonniere is a whimsical white feather concoction that will play off of the bride's dress. It might be very sunny, so don't be afraid to wear this on-trend straw fedora after the ceremony. Then, open a bottle of wine, sit back, and soak it all in. I hope you have a fabulous time!

What do you love about weddings?

I think weddings are amazing. They are one of the most important days in the world for a couple. The excitement and the emotions are priceless. Being able to capture those moments make me feel honored.

Tell us a little about your work. How would you describe your style?

I would describe my style as simple and fun!

What advice do you have for grooms (and brides) when you are working with them?

Relax and have fun! Nervousness shows in your photos and you definitely don't want that! ALso getting your photo taken is your one opportunity to go all out. Outside of your wedding pictures, engagement sessions are perfect to dress up glamorously or wear something fun or even bring some fun props. It will make your photo session a memorable experience and of course you'll get some beautiful pictures!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Photography has been a passion of mine for a huge portion of my life. My dad loved photography and documented pretty much my entire childhood--a gift I am so grateful for. I started shooting weddings after taking some photographs at a close friends wedding as they say, the rest is history. I absolutely love the fact that I can capture a moment of time, an expression, a reaction, a feeling and be able to come back to the photograph and feel that way again years later.

Aside from photography, I'm addicted to the following things: fashion magazines, mint tea, shoes and purses :) I think nothing beats ending a hectic day than snuggling up with a great book. One of the most important things in the world to me is family. I love reckless abandon and make an effort to live my life to the fullest!

I think anyone who's ever planned a wedding has considered eloping. It's so romantic and Romeo and Juliet-like! But who really has the guts (or the family that understands) to actually do it? I just love that these two are making this moment about them and no one else. And I will continue this post while pretending I am Alexis on Prince Edward Island.

Some of my choices are similar in style to Sam and Mu's, such as these John Varvatos boots. If you're hiking to a cliff, it comes down to practicality. You don't want to be sweaty and muddied before the I Do's! And the shoes fit perfectly with an outdoor wedding. I chose azure for the tie (with seagulls for a seaside reference) and a blue windowpane shirt as its complement. No need to distract from the gorgeous scenery with outrageous colors! They have all they need right before them.

I picked a simple vest and pants for Matthew's outfit. Who says you have to wear a full suit? It's just the two of them - they should do it exactly as they want. And since Alexis's dress is raw silk, his look can go casual or formal. A locally-grown flower in her hair that mirrors Matthew's boutonniere and voila! A match made in cliffside heaven. His cuff links: vintage-looking airplanes for a couple that is flying off on a new journey. Finally, a Marinemaster watch and their beautiful Golden Retriever round out the mix. Eloping on a Bluff - Option 2

Wow. Who doesn't dream of eloping...on a cliff (Prince Edward Island. Did anyone see today's Live with Regis and Kelly?!?)...next to an ocean...with only you, your honey and dog!? Well, that's what Alexis and her fiance, Matthew, will be doing in a few short weeks! Their colors? Red from the clay landscape, green from the fields and of course, blue from the ocean! She'll wear an ivory trumpet dress with an sweetheart neckline in raw silk. Breathtaking. So, what will he wear?

I chose neutral tones with accents of red and blue. I'm so excited about the lightweight chino suit from JCrew. I think it's a perfect complement to his athletic, yet sophisticated style. As for the shirt, I found a light blue gingham shirt. It's a beautiful summer option. After the ceremony, I see Matthew slinging his jacket over his shoulders, cuffing his pants and rolling up his sleeves. Ah, perfection. The tie is equally fun. I rarely get to recommend knit ties! I chose a navy and light blue (same color as the shirt) striped tie. Remember girls, don't be afraid to mix and match patterns! It's so easy to do. All of Matthew's accessories are brown, rugged and have a slightly worn-in look. I love the boots from Frye; they are functional and fashionable. The deep red laces are totally in line with Alexis's wedding colors. I imagine their wedding taking place on a sunny day, so Matthew definitely needs a pair of retro sunglasses in tortoise shell from Persol. The red and navy watch is sporty, fun and not-too serious. Finally, I chose a boutonniere with a leafy and berry accent. Heart!

Eloping on the Bluff

How romantic for this couple to elope for their wedding day. Against the stunning backdrop of the Prince Edward Islands, the bride and groom's outfits will beautifully complement the scenery. To really get a sense of the color palette, I included a collection of images from nature- the rust and pink colors of the cliffs and bluffs, the various blues of the ocean and sky, and the myriad greens of growth. Taking a cue from this color story, I opted for a navy linen suit by Paul Smith. I paired it with some awesome leather Alexander McQueen boots that are hand-carved. I felt that for this wedding, this beautiful boot was more fitting than a classic dress shoe. And, they are totally an investment- boots are a great option for men when you want to look polished so don't want to wear your sneaks but don't want to wear boring dress shoes, either. In the fall, pair these boots with some dark jeans or olive colored utility pants and a flannel shirt. Or, go a bit edgier and pair it with darker colors to really highlight the cognac color of the boot. These boots will give any outfit some serious character. A simple feather boutonniere (inspired by Pomp & Plumage), silver cufflinks, and a toffee colored crocodile-band watch with navy face round out the look. I also selected a beautifully textured dusty pink silk tie to subtly hint at the colors along the bluffs at sunset.

Sneak Peek...Just a Simple Wedding for Two!

Our next bride, Alexis Conrad, will be married to her fiance, Matthew Black, in just a short 22 days! How wonderfully exciting! To complement the beautiful setting, Alexis will don an elegant gown that she describes as a light ivory fitted flare gown made of raw silk, topped of with a hint of a sweetheart neckline (very enticing)!

I'm also in love with the fact that Alexis and Matthew's wedding colors are simply the rich red hue of the red clay, the blue satin ocean and of course, the lush green grass! --Nature's beauty!

I think Alexis and Matthew's romantic outdoor elopement will go perfectly with a boutonniere from Pomp & Plumage!

What advice do you have for grooms (and brides) when you are working with them?

I love hearing all the details, seeing photos, learning more about the bride and groom, and discussing lots of options so that I can design a custom piece that fits perfectly with a couple's design concept and personality. Don't be shy to ask lots of questions, send inspiration photos, and - if possible - leave lots of time prior to the big day so that we can create something perfect.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am a designer and maker of boutonnieres and other wedding accoutrements for style-conscious brides and grooms who are seeking well-designed pieces made by hand with integrity. It's important to me that my pieces are not only uncommon and well-made but affordable.

My process is very organic. I sit down with my materials and piece things together in ways that highlight the innate qualities of the materials (i.e. letting tulle pouf, silk drape and feathers plume). I am uncompromising in my attention to detail and to the interplay of colour and texture. I love pieces on a grand scale and those that are surprisingly intricate and thoughtful for their small size. I don't like many things that are average, in-between or moderate. I love working on custom orders that reflect a client's personality.

I love design. And I'm obsessed with weddings.

Latest Inspiration:
the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi (finding beauty in the asymmetry, impermanence and textures of nature).

The True Gentleman - Option 3 - by Providence Classic

Historic Saint James Chapel in Chicago? Check. The world-famous Drake Hotel overlooking Lake Michigan? Check. Throw in the December holidays and this is a wedding with ultimate elegance.

Courtney and Chris's winter wedding is destined to be a refined affair. Case in point - her Monique Lhuillier dress: glamour all the way. Since Chris already purchased his Paul Smith tuxedo (yay! great choice!), he just needs a few 'ornaments' to make the whole ensemble sparkle.

First off - black patent leather and suede dress loafers from Dolce & Gabbana. I'll be honest: I am not a fan of traditional tuxedo shoes (probably because the nicest pair is virtually indistinguishable from the rental version). But these are perfect. A vintage-looking James Bond-esque watch adds a dash of stylish masculinity, while Georgetown cufflinks are a nod to where the couple first met. I guess you could call me a non-traditionalist when it comes to men's clothing, because I am also proposing no cummerbund. Who needs it? A crisp white tuxedo shirt and rich black belt are just right. A black silk moire or black velvet (it's cold outside!) bow tie top it all off. For a boutonniere - the classic white dendrobium orchid. Simple luxury.

Courtney's dress is the kind you dream about when you are little. I picture her with something in her hair - an antique crystal comb or pin (to blend with the Drake Hotel location) or a beautiful flower from her bouquet. The perfect wedding party gift? Vintage jewelry that each girl can wear the day of.

And last but not least, my dream wedding gift for the couple - gorgeous luggage they can keep forever.

The True Gentleman - Option 2

I'm so excited to be working with the next couple, Courtney and Christopher. Their December wedding in Chicago sounds so glamorous and festive with stained glass windows, marble entrances and gilded chandeliers. Outside the window of their ballroom guests can enjoy the twinkly lights of Lake Shore Drive. So pretty.

Courtney describes Christopher as athletic, stylish and slightly preppy. They've already purchased a Paul Smith tuxedo with peaked lapels which I think will be perfect for their big day. I chose sleek and stylish accessories and accent pieces for the groom. Let's start with my favorite piece, the bow tie. The J. Press bow tie is ah-mazing as it is black with little skull and cross bones embroidered on it. In my search, I also found black dress socks with a skull and cross bones from J. McGaughlin. The best way to give your guy's shirt a unique spin is to mix and match cuff links with similar designs or colors. Who doesn't love the duck and dog motif on the cuff link from Paul Smith - manly, yet adorable. While we have some whimsical accessories, Christopher can still keep his outfit classic by adding a pair of sleek, patent leather dress shoes. Finally, I chose a sleek miniature Calla Lilly with Ornithogalum Arabicum and Scented Geranium Leaf boutonniere that's perfectly tied-off with a black ribbon. To pamper your man, get him an old-fashion shaving kit from the Art of Shaving.

Also, I found a vintage menu from the Gold Coast Room that Courtney can draw inspiration from when she creates her wedding stationary. So cool!

The True Gentleman

I think that a tuxedo would go really well with this beautiful wedding gown. How convenient that Chris has recently purchased a Paul Smith tuxedo!

All Chris needs is to add his own touch to a beautiful, classic tux. For a December wedding that is in the late afternoon / evening, which is set in a beautiful chapel and then in an ornate gilded room, I would opt for a little bit of old-school glamour. Remember those black and white movies where all of the men seem to constantly be wearing some dashing tux or suit? Let's shoot for that but with an updated, modern take on this classic gentlemanliness.

I was inspired by the simple navy and white theme, and took a bit of liberty with this color scheme and added a bit of brighter blue in my design board. I love the ornate yet modern look of this blue chandelier, and got inspired by this piece. I kept the boutonnieres simple and elegant with solitary white orchids. The pocket watch makes you a real gentleman and the silver tone keeps it modern rather than vintage. Other images pictured here are classic patent tux shoes, a beautiful cummerbund and bow tie set, and unexpected yet cool batman cufflinks (to keep it not too formal!). It's fun to have a little element of surprise that really shows off your taste and personality like these simple cufflinks.

Also pictured is a gorgeous blue bra of the most exquisite lace. Brides are supposed to wear something blue, aren't they? Why not pick something a bit unexpected?

Groom (and bride) Style Tip...A Not So Casual City Hall Wedding

While there are many weddings out there, destination weddings, themed weddings, and of course, traditional weddings, we must not forget about those sweet intimate City Hall weddings!

Why might people opt for a City Hall wedding? Well I can think of 3 great reasons:

1. To save money

2. To save time and the stress of planning a wedding

3. Because they are just madly in love and are eager to get married!

Whatever the reason a couple may choose to be married in City Hall, there is no reason as to why their wedding can't be chic and special!

How to make a City Hall wedding fabulous and memorable?

1. One of the downsides (or upsides) of a City Hall wedding is that the time frame is quite short. However, you shouldn't let time quickly pass you by in this ceremonious occasion, but capture it in a photo...or more! Hire a photographer for your nuptials at City Hall!

2. Brides and grooms: you can still look dashing on your wedding day regardless of the location! Remember Carrie's blue satin Manolo Blahniks? Those pumps were surely the icing on the cake to her outfit!

3. The same rules still apply when it comes to flowers! Brides, you can still have the beautiful bouquet you've always dreamt of holding on your wedding day and grooms, splash a taste of elegance on your suit with a delicate boutonniere!

The Preppy Groom by Providence Classic - Option 3

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree and our preppy groom Andrew and I are practically branch siblings. I hail from New England and at my own wedding, took Rhode Island's prep-tastic nautical history to a new level of design obsession. A gorgeous Greenwich wedding in an historic Victorian house? Sign me up!

First of all, how pretty is the name Rosemary? Next to her beautiful and feminine dress, Andrew's got to look classic and put together. This outfit may seem a tad on the informal side, but the quality of each garment ensures an absolutely refined look. Case in point: Ralph Lauren blazer and white dress pants. Gucci horsebit loafers. Rolex Submariner watch. Ray Ban "Wayfarers" in tortoiseshell. Heck, in twenty years, Andrew's outfit will still be in preppy style.

A white shirt (I threw in the prepster's fave pale pink just for fun) with an olive green tie blends into the wedding colors, while cheeky but subtle cufflinks made to look like buttons keep the limelight on the handsome groom. And a fun, quirky reference to Greenwich's seaside locale in this masculine boutonniere (no flowers!) adds a bit of whimsy.* A look that is understated and classic - perfect for this elegant young couple's modest wedding.

The Preppy Groom - Option 2

Our next bride and groom, Rosemary and Andrew, are hosting their wedding at Rosemary's parent's Victorian house in Greenwich. I love weddings at home. They are so intimate and so personal. As the bride says, their wedding is "modest" with mainly their closest family and friends in attendance.

Rosemary's fiance, Andrew, is very preppy, naming Ralph Lauren, JCrew, and Vineyard Vines as some of his favorite stores. So, what will he wear?

I chose a navy blazer (with brass buttons) and khaki slacks as the foundation pieces - quintessentially New England. Because the wedding colors are olive green, pale yellow, beige and white, I found the most perfect tie and bow tie for the occasion. I love the classic and clean style of the tie. The tie reminds of a creamsicle! The seersucker bow tie is equally amazing with faded green, yellow and red as its main colors. Love it. The Vineyard Vines belt is double-sided, perfect for a no-nonsense dresser. This particular belt has a leather face and a green/lobster face. Totally preppy. All Andrew has to do is add their wedding colors to his socks! While I'm absolutely certain that the wedding will be sunny and beautiful, I found a green tartan umbrella for their wedding...Just in case. After all, it is New England! A preppy look is not complete without something monogrammed, so I found cuff links in Andrew's initials! My favorite piece? The Fritts Rosenow boutonniere, of course! It's one part nautical, one part preppy - totally cool. Finally, for the day-after brunch, Andrew can relax in his Vineyard Vines flip flops.

The Preppy Groom

Rosemary and Andrew are to be married next June in a Greenwich, CT backyard. Rosemary describes Andrew's style as "very preppy." So, to keep with the summer prep theme, I decided to go with a navy suit from Ralph Lauren paired with gingham in various colors. The gingham could actually be the whole dress shirt for a fun look, or perhaps just the tie or pocket square for something a bit more subtle. In any case, gingham adds a fun spin on a classic navy suit, and it is both summery and preppy. I also decided to add some fun details like a green Lacoste watch and a nautically-inspired keychain (which might make great wedding favors!).

Classic Wedding with Vintage Flourish - Take 3 - by Providence Classic

Oh, Kristine and Billy! They are too cute for words! Their wedding? A traditional ceremony with a fun, vintage reception in Ocean City, New Jersey for a couple with classic tastes (J. Crew, Ralph Lauren). She's wearing Monique Lhuillier and so he must match the romantic elegance of her dress. My choice: this Hugo Boss black suit and slim black tie. Its formal enough for the Catholic church ceremony, but also a neutral canvas that will blend in with the party vibe afterward. Instead of adding the wedding colors into Billy's outfit - wine, eggplant, navy and French blue - I left room for the bridesmaid dresses, flowers and groomsmen's ties to showcase them. Heck, Kristine and Billy are the stars of this production - why not stand out?

Slim-toed oxfords keep the look tailored for the ceremony, but come cocktail hour, it's time to loosen the tie and break out the party shoes. AKA - patent leather boat shoes! I love these! What's more perfect for a beach town reception than shoes made for life on the water? A classic silver buckled belt (monogrammed with Billy's initials) and the ever-stylish Cartier leather tank watch round out the look. For a dash of fun? Film reel cuff links act as a sly hint to the two actors' shared passion.

I just couldn't help myself - there are so many cool things you can do with a reception like theirs. How about this Salt Water Taffy cake? A retro popcorn machine? Vintage movie star heels a la Christian Louboutin for Kristine? I would have elegant linens and flowers for the decor, but take the formality down several notches by serving playful, fun food - hamburgers, corn dogs, french fries, lobster sandwiches, ice cream cones, warm pretzels, mini milkshakes, cotton candy, a bright candy table! Hmm, can you tell I'm living vicariously through these two lovebirds?

The Classic Wedding with Vintage Flourish - Option 2

The couple, Kristine and Billy, is so cute, which is why it was so fun putting their design board together. Kristine describes her wedding as "classic, romantic with some vintage touches." They're holding their ceremony at a Catholic church built in the 1920s and then having boardwalk themed cocktail hour! Kristine describes Billy as, "All-American," who prefers JCrew and Ralph Lauren. So, here's what I put together for him.

Their wedding palette is navy, french blue, wine and eggplant, so I instantly knew that I wanted to go with a dark blue, two-button suit. I also chose a matching vest. If you can't tell, I've been totally into vests lately! I chose dress shirt that is a nod to Kristine's french blue. The blue on blue gives the whole look depth and visual interest. It's perfect for their semi-formal wedding. Then, I went ahead and chose some cognac colored accessories - not only does it complement the navy suit, but it also gives a vintage-y feel to the pieces. The shoes are perforated with a simple, yet classic design. The Pakerson belt and cuff links are ah-mazing. The belt is actually hand-painted! I pulled the whole look together with a wine-colored, striped tie. Finally, Kristine can decorate her cocktail hour with some vintage boardwalk postcards. And, I'm totally obsessed with the leather bound sketch book which can double as her guest book!

The Classic Wedding with Vintage Flourish

I personally love vintage inspired looks, and really got inspired by some key pieces that come to my mind when someone says "vintage"- a beautifully broken in piece of luggage, an elegant bicycle with a story, and an old, rusty key. With these pieces in mind, I've kept the groom's look simple in a beautiful, classic black suit and an eggplant colored silk tie to match the wedding's theme colors. The special little detail here are the gold tone vintage inspired watch cufflinks. The look is clean, elegant, with just that special vintage touch. Amanda and her Carhart-loving man are getting married in Addison, Vermont next summer. This is a relaxed, outdoor affair with touches of cute personality (like those buck & doe wedding cake toppers!). With Amanda's dress on the more formal side, the groom's got to match, but still fit in with the casual scenery. I chose a stone-grey suit that complements the tone of her dress, but isn't too fancy. The windowpane shirt in black is a subtle reference to the plaid New Englanders know and love, and a simple black tie adds a touch of formality. Staying in the neutral zone keeps it all a little more masculine, and allows room for the boutonnieres to play up the colors of the flowers and bridesmaid dresses.

This groom loves FOX Racing gear and I threw him a bone with the black belt, which totally goes with the color scheme and gives a wink to his edgier side. Black men's oxfords work for a classic route, but if he really wants to make the outfit his own, why not wear black leather sneakers? I love when grooms add their own twist. It's so much more memorable and adorably endearing!Lastly, no cuff links for this groom. His shirt doesn't need 'em - and the silver watch is both functional and good-looking.

I couldn't decide what boutonniere to add - with this backdrop, you can do any color combination! I opted instead for a peony bloom bouquet for Amanda that showcases deep pinks and light blushes. For the boutonniere, adding in a berry, leaf or fern reminiscent of the Addison area (along with a bloom from the bride's bouquet) would top it all off. Voila!

Pink, Red & Black in the Country - Option 2

Our next bride, Amanda, will be having her wedding in the beautiful state of Vermont. I love summer weddings in Vermont. So charming!

What will the groom, Thomas, wear to this low-key, casual affair? Check it out. The key design element was the numbered back drop. I bet you can't guess what they are! They're actually numbered coasters from Heather Lins Home! I'm totally loving its rustic quality. These would be perfect as framed table numbers (hmm...hint, hint.).

Using the background as inspiration, I decided to warm up Amanda's wedding palette (pink, red and black) with browns and other neutrals. The watch, belt and boots are a great example of this - mostly black with a bit of brown. The pieces are a bit rugged, yet clean at the same time. And, check out the unique buckle on the belt! It's totally amazing. I chose a black vest and pants option without a suit jacket. The vest alone gives off a casual, yet polished look. The red tie has a bit of a pink pattern, which is totally in line with the bride's wedding colors. Then, a pink pocket square to give the vest a hint of color. Finally, the whole look is topped off with a straw fedora!

Although this is a relaxed country wedding, I made sure to keep in mind the pink, red, and black wedding palette that Amanda and Thomas chose. To keep the look relaxed, opt for a dark suit over a tux, such as this classic two button style by Hugo Boss. Bring out the theme colors in small accents- such as pink blooms on the boutonniere or a colored silk tie. I would suggest not to add accent color to all accessories, which might be a bit overkill. At most, add color to two locations, such as the tie and boutonniere, the tie and cufflinks, the pocket square and tie, etc. In this set, I have decided to put color in the boutonniere and the tie, which is why I chose the black and silver cufflinks.

This look, although classic, gets quite playful when the bright wedding theme colors are added. It will be sure to complement both your bridesmaids and groomsmen, as well as your beautiful gown. I hope you got some good ideas! - Makiko

Summer is right around the corner and for those of you with an outdoor venue, we’ve got some cool tips for you!

Grooms:

Don’t think that a bride is the only one who can get away from the hot summer weather. You might not be able to opt for a shorter dress, but you can choose the fabric of your suit. The best way to stay cool under the sun is to go for a lightweight approach. Instead of the traditional heavy wool suit, try a nice linen suit. This light fabric allows the suit to be more breathable so you can endure the summer heat.

Brides:

As mentioned above, short dresses are an alternative for long heavy gowns, but if you like length and drama, you can always go for a sleek silk dress! Not only is this material extremely light, but it’s also super soft and smooth and definitely great for movement and comfort! If you’re not fond of silk, there are also other fabrics such as chiffon and charmeuse that have the same lightweight and comfort effect as silk!

Look how airy this dress is! It will flow beautifully down the aisle.

Our bride Kimberly is marrying her love in Atlanta, Georgia in the spring. The look of her wedding is modern elegant romance, without being too formal. I chose this black D&G suit as the perfect example of classic with a contemporary touch. Think Josh Duhamel when he married that lady who will remain nameless due to my jealousy. H.O.T!

Kimberly's man can go traditional - white shirt with slim black bow tie or a little more mod with a textured slim white tie - or add a little flavor. The striped shirt, which comes off as solid from a distance, can be paired with the white tie or, for a fashion forward guy (and Kimberly's man seems on-trend, wearing Diesel and True Religion), go ahead and mix prints! Wear it with the bow tie, my personal favorite.

I love accessories. And somehow I always pick the expensive ones! But these Steve Madden shoes - with a fabulous thin toe, a must with slimmer pant legs - are a steal at $99.95. A reversible belt will find use long after the wedding day while roulette or gun cuff links add a shot of personality (this ain't no boring groom!). A rose gold and black watch is so handsome - and the mixture of metals is more interesting than wearing silver or gold from head to toe.

I, too, chose a single white flower for the boutonniere - an anemone, classic southern elegance.

The Elegant, Modern Groom - Option 2

I'm so excited about this wedding! In the bride's own words, she's says, "I'm going for a very 'romantic', classic elegance. Lot's of candlelight." Imagine a soft, muted palette with ivory, white and blush. I'm just tickled by this color combination.

So, here's what I imagine the groom wearing. Let's start with the foundation pieces. I started with a notched lapel tuxedo - it's an updated tuxedo silhouette. Tuxedos do NOT need to have wing tip collars and cheesy ruffles on it. No. Instead I opted for something a little bit more streamlined - a wide-spread collar, subtly pleated bib front and hidden buttons - for the modern groom. Next I chose neutral toned accents. I found mother-of-pearl tuxedo studs and matching cuff links. It gives the shirt a hint of pink, blush and ivory. There are two tie options to choose from. While I normally avoid white ties, I do like this ivory option for photos. The groom can even switch into the black option for the reception. Who says a groom can't change up his outfit?! My favorite piece of this design board is the antique watch. The silvery, creamy look of the watch face (which is actually a silver dollar) is a perfect complement to the bride's romantic and elegant wedding. Finally, I love the brandy glass. Its curves are beautiful, yet streamlined. The bride can surprise her male (and female) wedding guests by offering cigars and after-dinner drinks!

When does one have a better occasion to wear a tuxedo than at their own wedding? With Kimberly's aesthetic in mind, I suggest a look that evokes classic Hollywood glamour yet keeps the look modern. Pull out the classic tux, but make sure that it's in an updated, tailored fit- such as this Hugo Boss beauty pictured below. Add a skinny tie (not too skinny- 2.5 or 2 inches) to stay with the modern look. Keep the cufflinks sleek in a silver tone with just a touch of sparkle. Choose a silk pocket square in a subtle accent color- such as a shimmering grey or sky blue. To top it off, wear a boutonniere with simple, elegant white blooms. This look is both elegant and modern at the same time. It will be sure to make your groom shine. Congratulations!

A Romantic Affair

Our groom has an Indian Summer wedding (think early September) in upstate New York, complete with a garden ceremony and reception in an historic barn. No bales of hay here, instead it will be a fabulous fete held in the beautiful outdoors - simple, elegant and with a few fun references to the guest of honor, Mother Nature.

I chose this classic cut navy suit because it's timeless. And Italian. There's no way around it, they cut the best fit for men's suits. And in linen, it's also perfect for warm weather occasions (the old bridesmaid dress adage - "And you can wear it again!" - is actually true for this groom!). The rich cognac brown of the Oxford shoes, belt and watch lends a less formal touch that is just right for an outdoor wedding, while the punch hole details on the shoe's toe playfully reference the barn.

There are several options for shirts and ties - mix and match as you please! Feel like showing a little personality? Pair the windowpane shirt with a plaid tie. It is fall, after all. Desire a more classic look, with a dash of fun? Pair the pale blue floral pattern tie with the windowpane check. And if your groom favors simplicity, choose the ever-stylish white button down, a backdrop for any color combination.

And heck (since I was a florist), I threw in two boutonnieres - a deep, pinky-red tulip and berry combination for autumnal contrast, or a fresh, light green option (made of unripe blueberries!) with mahonia leaf for a garden feel.

Who says boys don't like fashion? Those are just boys who haven't met a B&BT stylist. ;)

Groom Style Tip: Pleats versus Flat Front Suit Pants

Often times, a groom’s attire is overshadowed by the bride’s elaborate and elegant dress. Second to the wedding itself, it is the center of attention. However, the groom’s suit or tux is equally important and should be equally as fabulous as the bride’s dress. One of the biggest dilemmas for brides and grooms is to decide between pleated or flat suit pants. Here are some pros and cons:

Pleating for Forgiveness

Don’t be alarmed gentlemen, pleated suit pants are not as outdated as it may seem. While pleated suit pants are more traditional as opposed to their flat front counterpart, pleats are a great way to slim down a man with a fuller figure. Pleats allow for a more relaxed fit by providing more space for the seat and upper thigh.

Flattering Flat Fronts

We have reached the 21^st century and flat fronts are the suit pants of the new age. Unlike pleats, flat fronts tend to be more snug and form fitting. These modern suit pants emphasize a man’s silhouette and give the man a more unified and organized look.

Garden Wedding Style

There is no rule stating that grooms must wear either tuxedos or dark colored suits. In fact, growing up in the wine country of northern California, I saw many country-style weddings where brides and grooms fully embraced the relaxed-chic aesthetic of an outdoor wedding.

So, here is my suggestion. Why wear something stuffy? To complement your bride's beautifully simple dress, wear something relaxed yet sharp. Add a little bit of color with a silk tie or pocket square that are the colors of blossoms. You'll be comfortable and feel at ease on your big day. Good luck!

I would say that I'm modern and romantic. I love ruffles and any fabrics that flutter. I'm a huge fan of soft, flowing materials such as cotton-silk, silk or chiffon, especially in neutral colors. But, having lived in the city my whole life, I also like things that are streamlined and unfussy.

And, as you can tell from the above picture...I'm also not afraid to be goofy in public.

Why do I love weddings?

Weddings are an expression of one's creativity, personality and style, whether it be flowers, gown, ring, venue, etc. You are given a blank slate; you have the freedom to make major decisions.

What do you hope brides (and grooms) will get out of the blog?

My work at 9tailors allows me to collaborate with many brides and grooms. I feel honored that I get to be a part of one of the most important days of their lives. To create something for the bride and groom that is a reflection of their combined tastes and personalities is also an incredible joy.

After having worked with many brides, it became clear to me that their main priority is to create a cohesive look to the wedding. Most importantly, brides want the groom's outfit to complement the bride's gown. However, it can be stressful to shop for the guys....It can be a dizzying array of collars, cuffs, lapels, fabrics, etc. So, my hope is that this blog will help demystify men's fashion and inspire brides and grooms everywhere!

Groom Style Tip #11: Bali Blue & Pink

I've been doing a lot of destination weddings over at 9tailors. Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Bali (super envious, especially with all the snow out there right now). But, it seems to make sense. Brides and grooms want unconventional wedding, thus need unconventional wedding attire.

The next wedding featured below is from a couple who had their wedding in Bali. I worked with the bride to personalize each shirt and add custom accents.

All the dress shirts were made in a pale pink shirting fabric with light blue button holes at the cuff. If you look closely, you can see a hint of color at the cuff.

The bride and I decided to monogram the wedding date inside the collar. We also monogrammed each shirt with either the groomsmen's initials or nickname.

All the groom wore a white suit. The rest of the male wedding attendants wore light khaki suits.

My fiance just recently received a lightweight scarf as a Christmas gift. He's not into accessories because he's a simple guy. But, as in women's outfits, its amazing how much this little extra fabric around the neck, collar bone or shoulders can do! He looked so handsome...even slightly European (and...this is difficult to pull off as he is 100% Asian). If your groom is as simple as my guy, it IS possible to upgrade his look without killing your budget.

The scarves above are all stylish, slightly patterned, lightweight...and warm! If you're planning a destination honeymoon and unsure of the weather, these items are perfect to bring along (just roll them up and you're all set!). And, the best part? Groom Style #29: In Love with Gray

My wedding is coming up (as I wrote about last week). So, I thought that I would try to put together a design board for my fiance.

The wedding will be held at a Boston hotel. I chose this dress from Reem Acra over two years ago! I know. I'm not a procrastinator. The wedding will be gray, pink and yellow. Think the Miss Dior Cherie commercials directed by Sophia Coppola. LOVE. For the most part, the wedding has been planned out. But, I haven't had time to purchase my groom's outfit yet!

You'd think that as the co-founder of a custom menswear company I would be able to dream up an amazing outfit. However, this project was not without its challenges. My fiance has very "interesting" taste, which is completely divergent from mine. He has about 10 pairs of velor jumpsuits (and one with the Gucci logo on it) that he wears out regularly. And, despite his usually laid-back demeanor, he's strangely particular when it comes to his clothing. So, for the picky groom, I think it's really important to keep the outfit clean and unfussy especially if you've decided not to rent a tux from a chain store.

The charcoal suit is modern, clean. The two-button is always my go-to choice; it's a more streamlined-look. And, best of all? It's slimming. The tie is made by Alexander Olch. Very luxurious - made from Peruvian Alpaca wool - very pricey, but totally worth it. For the more laid-back guy, leather loafers with no laces is probably the way to go. My groom was adamant about that.

The colorful accents come through in a few places. I'm in love with the cufflinks - gray with pink floral accents! Instead of doing a boutonniere, we are actually doing this pocket square. I love the pink hounds tooth as it really punches up the color of the suit. Finally, the shirt pulls the whole look together. He's chosen (all by himself) a textured white shirting fabric with a light-pink gingham accent. The pink accent will remain hidden inside the collar band and cuffs. When he lets loose though during the reception that pink gingham will peak out just a bit!

Wedding in Boston

I'm going to start with a project that is near and dear to my heart... my own wedding. I'm getting married in Boston in May. My colors are pale gray, pink and yellow. I'm really hoping that it will be romantic, soft and most importantly, fun.

My dress is a Reem Acra from fall 2007. I can't wait to have my first dress fitting, which is occurring next week! Yikes! Maybe I should start dieting soon.

You're probably wondering why I have two pairs of shoes. I realized last week when the seamstress called to schedule me for my first dress fitting that I had NOT purchased any shoes. So, in a hurry, I purchased two pairs from Amazon. When they arrive, I'll decide then and see which one I like the best. Thoughts anyone?

Anyway, I'll return on Monday with what he's going to wear.

Groom Style Tip #9: Mad About Cultural Affairs

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending my cousin's wedding in Malaysia. The ceremony and reception were beautiful. Malay, Indian, Chinese, Muslim, Hindu influences were nicely woven into all elements of the wedding. It was truly a multi-cultural event!

After my cousin's wedding, I concluded the following: First, it IS possible to infuse multi-cultural attire, foods, traditions, etc. into a wedding. Second, it IS possible to outfit your groom into non-Western suit attire. See image below.

Even if you aren't Malaysian, here are some some great style takeaways:

Grooms can wear color. My cousin chose to wear pink and orange. The key is that you don't always have to default to the basic black suit/tux. There are so many beautiful options from gray to khaki to seersucker to baby blue.
Accessories are key. Your accessories will personalize the outfit. My cousin-in-law decided to don traditional Malay accessories, such as headdress, jewelry and wooden dagger. I'm not suggesting that your groom carry weapons to the wedding. BUT, you can still use wedding appropriate accessories to play up your wedding colors, show off your heritage, and embrace your groom's personal style (my fiance wants to wear an ascot...hmmm). Colorful socks, unique neck wear, quirky boutonnieres, and sophisticated pocket squares, etc., are great places to start when personalizing your groom's outfit.
Make sure your groom is comfortable. It is so important to take your groom's feelings, personal style and comfort into consideration. My cousin-in-law loves to wear a ring on each finger, so he wore lots of man-jewelry at the wedding. However, if your groom is not comfortable wearing pink or ruffles or flip flops, it's important not to force him into it.

After a week of traveling (Hong Kong - Shanghai - Hong Kong - Boston), I'm finally home with my fiance and kitty (yes, my cat has his own blog). Now, back to B&BT work!

Anyway, just wanted to share some news. 9tailors will be hosting its 3rd Custom Clothing Event in Boston on Saturday, August 29! Details here.

9tailors has been dressing wedding after wedding after wedding this season. One reason is that brides and grooms can design affordable, one-of-a-kind custom dress shirts for the guys! This event will be a fantastic opportunity for couples to see what 9tailors has to offer.

Here's what one groom had to say about his experience:

“9 Tailors made the shirts for the my groomsmen in my wedding. Not only were the shirts exactly what I asked for (cuffs, collar, color were just as I envisioned), the fit was amazing. Groom Style Tip #8: Mad About HK Wedding Mags

So, the last few weeks while I've been visiting my family in Hong Kong, I've been flipping through some local wedding magazines. Here are some pages ripped from my favorite, Cosmopolitan Bride.

Three notes:

First, I apologize for the quality of the images as I am working with less technology (no real PhotoShop) at my disposal (I should really convince my parents to invest in the program).

Second, the prices you see below are in Hong Kong dollars. I don't want anyone to freak out because a pair of YSL shoes cost $5,200. Don't worry. Just divide by 7.8...

Third, pardon the small typo below. When Cosmo Bride says, "Gloom's Style," I think they really mean "Groom's Style."

Hong Kong weddings tend to be more formal occasions, thus grooms like to wear full-on tuxes to weddings. It's also not uncommon to have the groom change outfits 2, 3, 5 or more times during the 12-course Chinese wedding banquet. This magazine recommends, "While grooms tend to choose more popular colors, such as black, white and gray...they can use boutonnieres, bow ties and cummerbunds to add a hint of color." Personally, I really like the chic, monochromatic look (to the left) myself. Very modern.

Hong Kong guys are very serious about their accessories. They like bracelets, watches, rings... you name it. They also like to wear things with more flair to them. Take a look at the angles on the rings above; they're a bit rocker-ish. But, they still have a beautiful, yet very masculine quality to them.

Hong Kong guys also love their shoes (brand name ones, especially). Quality dress shoes can definitely put a dent in your budget, but your groom won't be wearing them every day. So, they will last you for many years to come, making the investment seem somewhat reasonable. I particularly like the Louis Vuitton dress boot on the lower right side. It's perforated all around, giving it a slightly textured touch.

Groom Style Tip #7: Mad About Mixing Patterns

A lovely bride recently asked me how to match her navy braces with pink polka dots. As I began to do research on this, I kept asking myself, "Should she go with a patterned tie or a solid tie?" I love to play with patterns and textures so, naturally I went with the former option. But, often times, pattern-on-pattern can end disastrously. So, what's the best way to mix and match? Here are a few tips.

All shirting fabrics available at 9tailors;

Rule #1: Mix subtle with subtle

The key here is to pick subtle patterns with other subtle patterns in complementary shades. This might be the easiest look to pull off. Look at the example on the upper left corner. Start off with neutral shades (black, gray, white, etc.). When I mean subtle, I mean small, thin, textured (e.g., gray on gray, black on gray) colors or patterns. In other words, nothing should jump out at you at all.

Rule #2: Mix similar shades and/or tones together

The key here is to pick colors that complement each other in shade or in tone. Look at example 2 on the upper right corner. Start off with your shirt. The shirt is primarily blue with a subtle white checkered pattern on it. Then, go with a tie that picks up the equally vibrant shade of blue. If you are having a hard time figuring out colors, use a color wheel. It's very helpful!

Rule #3: Vary the size of the patterns

The key here is to choose one larger sized pattern with a smaller sized pattern. Same sized patterns might be a little too busy or too crazy for some of you. So, this is a great option for you if you want a cleaner, more streamlined look. The lower left combination is a good example of this. The purple thin stripes in the shirt play off the lavender stripes in the tie. Also, notice how the space in between the stripes are also varied as well. This prevents the look from being too matchy.

Rule #4: Mix two different patterns

The key here is to mix a smaller pattern and a larger pattern. So, if you wear a tie with a larger pattern, then go with a smaller striped pattern shirt and vice versa. See the example on the lower right corner. The paisley in the tie is a much bolder print than the stripes in the shirt. the In this option, the pink of the shirt and the periwinkle in the tie still match.

The above rules will help you avoid making mixing mistakes. Your groom and your groomsmen will look quirky, yet sophisticated!

Groom Style #28: Made in Manhattan

So, I finally got my act together (I've been traveling overseas). And, I'm ready to post this week. A beautiful bride, Sarah*, wrote to me last week about her wedding. She will be marrying her fiance, Robert, in November at a refurbished church turned recording studio turned club/lounge/restaurant called the Providence in Manhattan. Sarah* will be wearing this gorgeous tulle and lace gown from Sottero & Midgley. Their colors, pewter and blue, are based on the couple's birthstones (opal for Robert and Sapphire for Sarah*). From the pictures of Providence and from Sarah's explanation it looks like it will be a vibrant and festive affair! Let's see what he's going to wear.

Sarah* wants to make sure that Robert is comfortable, yet polished. When I read this, I immediately thought of the late Paul Newman. He defines classic, American style with his slim-cut, charcoal suits, dark ties and cuff links. The gray suit is Paul Smith. The gray-striped shirt from Donald Trump. I love the gray striped dress shirt with a white collar - perfect for their semi-formal occassion. There are two tie options: a silk, patterned tie from Georgio Armani and a silk-knit black tie. Either would go well with the pewter and blue colors of their wedding. The opal cufflinks are a nod to Sarah* and Robert's style theme. The shoes are perfect for the casual guy - as this requires very little effort to put on or take off! I also love the modern take on the wing-tip detail. Lastly, Robert can sport the blouson and classic undershirt on his honeymoon - so Paul Newman. All he needs is a pair of jeans and brown loafers!

I'm not talking about your straight, and might I add, boring silk bow ties. I'm talking about it's friendlier, more approachable cotton cousin. Maybe it's the return of Americana style that's made me fall in love with the bow tie again? All I know is that the punchy colors of the madras, floral and paisley patterns are perfect for an end-of-summer beach or farm chic wedding.

Just take a look at the J Press site. All of the madras bow ties are "out of stock." It's not hard to see why the preppy options don't stay on the shelves for very long.

There's another reason to rejoice...Apparently, the bow tie has been so popular that even the LA Times featured a "How To Make A Bow Tie" piece! Click here for the how-to. For those of you who are very crafty, you can make your own bow tie that matches your color and wedding themes. So, I have to apologize again for not posting in over a week. We've been very busy running around New York City and Boston for the 9tailors Custom Apparel Event. If you haven't had a chance to check it out, you can still help dress your groom on Saturday, June 27.

Anyway, on to our next beautiful bride, Becky. Becky and her fiance, Gord, will be married in July 2010 in London, Ontario. Yep. That's right. BB&T has gone international now. She describes her wedding as formal to semi-formal. Her Essence of Australia gown above will be perfect as she says her vows in a romantic, bloom-filled courtyard. She wants something unique, which is why she has turned to Snippet & Ink's cobalt and orange inspired wedding she saw a few months ago. Let's see what he's going to wear...

Since Becky describes Gord as being casual with some edge, I think that this slim, navy suit from Ted Baker is a perfect fit for him. If you haven't shopped Ted Baker, I suggest you start now. Modern, city-chic pieces - very Londoner. This particular suit is from the Zappos awesomely well-priced suit collection. On to the accent pieces. The cobalt and orange accessories really punch up the more somber mood of the suit. Blue, patent leather shoes from Grenson are the perfect touch to his outfit. I didn't want to go too edgy with all the pieces, so I kept the tie on the more traditional side. The tie has a small, blue paisley pattern on a tangerine background. I love the brightly colored belt made with recyclable materials. I also think that the cuff links and toy-like watch add a playful touch to the outfit. If you don't want to go too heavy with the accents, mixing more subtle pieces with the brightly colored ones are also a good idea. While Becky was not sure if she wanted all the groomsmen to sport a boutonniere, I think that this orange boutonniere from the most brilliant boutonniere-maker, Rosen Floral, might change her mind! Lastly, the passport holder and wallet is a beautiful, yet practical gift for the groom for his honeymoon (Please tell him his pants pocket is not an acceptable mode of transporting one of his most important documents). It's also in the perfect shade of cobalt!

You've probably noticed that the site looks a little different today than before. Don't fret. A hacker did not attack my site, rather my fiance, a web developer, changed the layout a tiny bit.

Anyway, on to today's post. Today, I wanted to feature some amazing pieces from Boston jewelry designer, Rebecca S. Scott. She is the owner and head designer of JewelsFabulous. If you are as addicted Etsy as I am, you're in luck. She has her own Etsy store. Awesome.

Now, I've seen these in person. I can't tell you how much I love, love, love her pieces. I am particularly fascinating by her metal work. By using a hammer passed down by a relative, she is able to create the most subtle, yet beautiful textures on her bracelets, earrings and necklaces. Since many of her pieces are under $100, these also make pretty amazing (and inexpensive) bridesmaids gifts. So, without further ado, here are her pieces.

Groom Style #26: Hay, we're in love.

Basically, I love everything that Thread makes. My heart literally flutters when I see this dress. I can't get over its simple, yet elegant design. I think it will look gorgeous on our next bride, Jenny. Jenny will marry her fiance, Michael, at the Inn at Mountain View Farm in Vermont this August. The ceremony and reception will be much like Jenny's dress above, beautiful and breezy. Since the couple will be married near an old converted horse barn, all of Jenny's bridesmaids will carry stalks of wheat instead of floral bouquets. Guests will witness Jenny and Michael's nuptials while sitting on hay bales. Love it. So, here's what I've come up with for her groom.

Vest: JCrew; Pants: JCrew; Shirt: Hugo Boss via Macy's; Shoes: Cole Hann via Bloomingdale's; Hat: Hats in the Belfry; Boutonniere: Thinkflowers.com; Belt: Cole Hann via Bloomingdale's; t-shirt: Gap; Shorts: Old Navy: Flip Flops: AE

I must admit; dressing Michael was a challenge. How do dress a guy who "hates" to dress up? Here's how. Keep everything clean, simple and functional. No over-the-top clothes or accessories allowed. Since Jenny has already purchased vests from JCrew, it only seems fitting that the pants should come from the same store. I love the vest and pants look. Very cute. The subtle blue and white stripes on the dress shirt and the red on the t-shirt will complement Jenny's wedding colors: cornflower blue and red. While Michael can opt to wear a white undershirt, I think that the red would bring an unexpected pop of color underneath his dress shirt. For the ceremony, I recommend wearing the dress shirt sleeves long. For the reception, I recommend rolling them up. Afterwards, I imagine a bonfire-style after-party (away from the hay of course) where Michael can sit back and relax in his red-T, khaki shorts and flip flops. The hat is a nice photo accessory, as it complements the wheat and hay back drop. Lastly, the shoes and belt above might be the most important items that a casual guy should have in his wardrobe: Cole Hann's Air Jackson slip-on shoes with Air Nike technology and Cole Hann's reversible black/brown belt. The former is for style and comfort. The latter is for function and versatility.

Jenny also asked me to find some dresses for their baby girl. So, here's what I found in their wedding colors! How cute are these?!!?

We've become so reliant on our smart phones, pdas and other eletronic devises for the time. Most likely, your groom won't be carrying his Blackberry or Iphone down the aisle (at least I hope not!). But, since he still needs to know the time and look stylish, let's give him some wrist-love. Accessorize his outfit with a watch that he'll want to wear now and forever.
